Connecticut Contractor License Classifications

In the state of Connecticut for your Contractor license, you should apply to the Connecticut State Department of Consumer Protection.

The Department of Consumer Protection breaks different general contracting jobs and activities into many groups. So, for each job and activity, you should have a relevant license.

The Connecticut Contractor license classifications and sub-classifications

Moreover, there are also differences between a contractor and a journeyperson. You can find the descriptions below.

The scope of the work for each classification or sub-classification is defined by the relevant Board.

Home Improvement Contractor

In short, this license will let you add an addition, remodel a bedroom or bathroom, repave the driveway, landscape the yard, install a swimming pool, add a new door to an existing garage, add a new porch, install new windows, etc.

C-5- Limited electrical contractor license

To clarify, with this license you may perform work only limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems, and telephone-interconnect. Moreover, the voltage of any system shouldn’t exceed 48 volts.

C-6- Limited electrical journeyperson

In short, the holder of this license may perform only work as defined for the C-5 category and only while in the employ of a licensed electrical contractor.

E-1- Unlimited electrical contractor

To clarify, with this license you will be able to do all electrical work as defined in section 20-330 of the general statutes.

E-2- Unlimited electrical journeyperson

To clarify, with this license you may do all electrical work as defined in section 20-330 of the Connecticut General Statutes, and only while in the employment of a properly licensed contractor.

L-1- Electrical lines contractor

To clarify, if you are a holder of this license, you may perform only work limited to line construction, including distribution systems, and their allied work, for public and private companies; installation, maintenance, and repair of all high-voltage cable splicing and pulling wire for all systems above 2,400 volts; traffic signal and highway lighting installation, maintenance and repair.

L-2 Electrical lines journeyperson

To clarify, if you are a holder of this license, you may perform only work limited to line construction, including distribution systems, and their allied work, for public and private companies; installation, maintenance, and repair of all high-voltage cable splicing and pulling wire for all systems above 2,400 volts; traffic signal and highway lighting installation, maintenance and repair, and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

L-5- Limited electrical contractor

In short, the holder of this license may perform work limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems. Moreover, the voltage of the system shouldn’t exceed 25 volts.

L-6- Limited electrical journeyperson

To clarify, this license allows you to work limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems, and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work. Moreover, the voltage of the system does not exceed 25 volts.

T-1- Limited electrical contractor

In short, this license allows you to work limited with telephone-interconnect systems.

T-2- Limited electrical journeyperson

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform only work as defined for the T-1 category and only while in the employ of a licensed electrical contractor.

FG-1 – Unlimited Contractor’s license for Flat Glass Work

In short, the holder of this license may perform the installation, maintenance, or repair of glass in residential or commercial structures.

FG-2 – Unlimited Journeyman’s License for Flat Glass Work

To clarify, an Unlimited Journeyman’s License may be issued to any person who has completed a bona fide apprenticeship program. Moreover, you should have not less than three years’ experience in the Flat Glass Work trade.

Heating, Piping, and Cooling License Types

B-1- Limited gas oil burner contractor

To clarify, this license allows you to work installing, servicing, and repairing gas or oil burners for domestic and light commercial installations.

B-2- Limited gas and oil burner journeyperson

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform only work of installing, servicing, and repairing gas or oil for domestic and light commercial installations as so defined above and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

B-3- Limited gas and oil burner contractor

In short, with this license you may perform the installation, servicing, and repairing of any gas or oil-fired burners.

D-1- Limited warm air, air conditioning, and refrigeration contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance, or alteration of any warm air, air conditioning, and refrigeration system. Moreover, it includes necessary piping for the conveyance of heating or cooling media and associated pumping equipment.

D-2- Limited warm air, air conditioning, and refrigeration journeyperson

To clarify, with this license you may perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance, or alteration of any warm air, air conditioning, and refrigeration system. And, it also includes necessary piping for the conveyance of heating or cooling media and associated pumping equipment, and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

D-3- Limited cooling contractor license

In short, this license allows you to perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance, or alteration of all refrigeration systems included in food storage, air conditioning, or special process systems.

D-4- Limited cooling journeyperson license

In short, this license allows you to perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance, or alteration of all refrigeration systems included in food storage, air conditioning, or special process systems. And only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

G-1- Limited heating, piping, and cooling contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, replacement, alteration, and maintenance of gas piping systems and approved gas appliances, gas utilization equipment, and accessories.

G-2- Limited heating, piping, and cooling journeyperson

In short, this license allows to perform the same scope of work as a G-1 license, but only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

S-1- Unlimited heating, piping, and cooling contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may do all heating, piping, and cooling work as defined in section 20-330 of the Connecticut General Statutes.

S-2- Unlimited heating, piping, and cooling journeyperson

In short, this license allows you to do all heating, piping, and cooling work as so defined only while in the employ of a licensed contractor.

S-3- Limited heating, piping, and cooling contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance, or alteration of any apparatus of piping, appliances, devices, or accessories for heating systems, boilers, etc. This also includes apparatus and piping for the generation or conveyance of steam, associated pumping equipment, and oil burner installation.

S-4 Limited heating, piping, and cooling journeyperson

In short, this license allows you to perform the same scope of work as the S-3 license, but only while the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

S-5- Limited heating, hot water, and steam contractor

That is to say, the holder of this license may perform only work limited to hot water or steam heating systems for buildings not over three stories high with a total heating load not exceeding 500,000 BTUs and steam pressure not exceeding 15 pounds. But, this does not cover the installation or servicing of oil burners of any size.

S-6- Limited heating, hot water, and steam journeyperson

In short, the holder of this license may perform the following work, but only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

S-7- Limited contractor

To clarify, with this license you may perform work limited to hot water or steam heating systems for buildings not over three stories high with a total heating load not exceeding 500,000 BTUs and steam pressure not exceeding fifteen pounds. Moreover, this license also covers the servicing and installation of oil burners handling up to five gallons per hour. As well as gas burners and gas piping for the work covered by this license.

S-8 LIMITED JOURNEYPERSON

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as S-7, but only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

S-9- Limited heating cooling contractor

To clarify, with this license may perform only work limited to hot water or steam heating systems for buildings not over three stories high with a total heating load not exceeding 500,000 BTUs. Moreover, the steam pressure shouldn’t exceed fifteen pounds, and/or cooling installations up to 35 tons per system.

S-10- Limited heating cooling journeyperson

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as S-9, only while in the employ of a licensed contractor.

Sheet Metal Licenses

SM-1- Limited sheet metal contractor

To clarify, with this license you may perform only work limited to the installation, erection, replacement, repair, or alteration of any ductwork system, both ferrous and nonferrous for ductwork systems of any size and type.

SM-2- Limited sheet metal journeyperson

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as the SM-1, only while in the employ of a contractor license for such work.

SM-3-Limited sheet metal residential/light commercial contractor

In short, the holder of this license may perform only work limited to the installation, erection, replacement, repair, or alteration of the ductwork system.

SM-4- Limited sheet metal residential/light commercial journeyperson

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as the SM-4, only while in the employ of a contractor license for such work.

SM-5- Limited sheet metal contractor hood systems

To clarify, this license allows you to perform only work limited to the installation, erection, replacement, repair, or alteration of the ductwork systems, both ferrous and nonferrous for hood ductwork systems of any size and type.

SM-6- Limited sheet metal journeyperson hood systems

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as the SM-6 may perform such work, but only while in the employ of a contractor license for such work.

 

Heart Product License Types

HPG-1- Contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform only work limited to “Hearth product work” which means the installation, service, or repair of a propane or natural gas-fired fireplace, fireplace insert, stove, or log set and associated venting and piping that simulates a flame of a solid fuel fire.

HPG-2- Journeyperson

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as the HPG-1, only while in the employ of a licensed contractor.

Plumbing Licenses

J-1- Limited contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform only work limited to domestic water pumps and water conditioning.

J-2- Limited well pumps and piping journeyperson

In short, this license covers the same scope of work as the J-2, but only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

P-1- Unlimited plumbing contractor

To clarify, if you’re a holder of this license, you may do all plumbing and piping work as defined in section 20-330 of the Connecticut General Statutes.

P-2- Unlimited journeyperson plumbing

In short, the holder of this license may do all plumbing and piping work as so defined, but only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

P-6- Limited sewer, storm, and water journeyperson

To clarify, this license permits the installation, repair, replacement, alteration, or maintenance of piping limited to water. As well as sewer and storm lines from the point of utility responsibility to a point immediately inside a structure. And only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

P-7- Limited sewer, storm, and water contractor

To clarify, this license permits the installation, repair, replacement, alteration. Or maintenance of piping limited to water, sewer and storm lines from the point of utility responsibility to a point immediately inside a structure.

P-8- Limited gasoline tank, piping, and pump journeyperson

That is to say, this license allows the installation, repair, replacement, alteration, or maintenance of piping for petroleum tanks and related pumping equipment only, and only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.

P-9- Limited gasoline tank, piping, and pump contractor

That is to say, this license permits the installation, repair, replacement, alteration. Or, maintenance of piping for petroleum tanks and related pumping equipment only.

W-8- Limited drain layer journeyperson

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform the following work. But only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work. The holder of this license may perform the installation, repair, replacement, or alteration of piping for storm and/or sanitary lines. This license does not permit any work on septic tank systems or inside a structure.

W-9- Limited drain layer contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform the installation. As well as repair, replacement, or alteration of piping for storm and/or sanitary lines. This license does not permit any work on septic tank systems or inside a structure.

 

Well Drilling Licenses

W-1- Limited water well contractor

That is to say, this registration permits the registrant to construct a well. Including but not limited to, the installation, repair, and maintenance of pumps, pump motors, pump piping, valves, wiring, electronic controls, and tanks.

W-2- Limited water well journeyperson

To clarify, with this license you are allowed to construct a well. Including but not limited to, the installation, repair, and maintenance of pumps. As well as pump motors, pump piping, valves, wiring, electronic controls, and tanks. This is only while the registrant is in the direct and regular employment of a contractor registered for such work.

W-3- Limited non-water or monitoring well contractor

To clarify, this registration permits the registrant to construct a well. Including but not limited to, the installation, repair, and maintenance of pumps, pump motors, pump piping, valves, wiring, electronic controls, and tanks.

W-4- Limited non-water or monitoring well journeyperson

That is to say, this license type allows to construct a well. Including but not limited to, the installation, repair, and maintenance of pumps. As well as pump motors, pump piping, valves, wiring, electronic controls, and tanks. This is only while the registrant is in the direct and regular employment of a contractor registered for such work.

W-5- Well casing extension contractor

To clarify, a good casing extension contractor license will permit you to perform plumbing and piping work. Also according to Chapter 393 to perform well casing extension, repair, and maintenance work.

W-6- Well casing extension journeyperson

That is to say, a well casing extension journeyperson license will allow you to perform plumbing and piping work. Also according to Chapter 393 to perform well casing extension, repair, and maintenance work.

 

Spa and Pool Trades Licenses

SP-1- Limited spa and pool contractor

To clarify, the holder of this license may perform swimming pool maintenance and repair work. This means the performance of all plumbing, heating, and electrical work necessary to service. Modify or repair any swimming pool, hot tub, spa, similar recreational or therapeutic equipment. It’s where such work commences at an outlet, receptacle, connection, backflow preventer. Or fuel supply pipe previously installed by a person holding the proper license.

SP-2- Limited spa and pool journeyman

In short, the holder of this license may perform all swimming pool maintenance and repair work. This is only while the licensee is in the employ of an SP-1 contractor licensed for such work.

F-1- Unlimited fire protection sprinkler contractor’s license

That is to say, the holder of this license may do all fire protection sprinkler system work. This is defined in section 20-330 of the Connecticut General Statutes.

F-2- Unlimited fire protection sprinkler journeyperson’s license

To clarify, the holder of this license may do all fire protection sprinkler system work. This is defined in section 20-330 of the Connecticut General Statutes. But only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work

F-3- Limited fire protection contractor’s license

That is to say, this license may allow you to do such that is involved with foam extinguishing systems. Also special hazard systems including water spray, and foam. Also carbon dioxide or dry chemical systems, halon, and other liquid or gas fire suppression systems.

F-4- Limited fire protection journeyperson’s license

To clarify, the holder of this license may do such work that is involved with foam extinguishing systems. Also pecial hazard systems including water spray, foam, carbon dioxide, or dry chemical systems. And also halon and other liquid or gas fire suppression systems. But only while in the employ of a contractor licensed for such work.
