Connecticut Marriage License

In short, yes. In accordance with section C.G.S. § 46b-21, you are can’t marry the following relatives:

  • You can’t marry your parent
  • A grandparent also can’t become your spouse
  • You can’t marry your child
  • Your grandchild can’t become your spouse as well
  • A brother or a sister can’t marry you as well
  • Your parent’s sibling also can’t become your spouse
  • Your sibling’s child can’t marry you
  • A stepparent can’t marry you
  • Your stepchild also can’t become your spouse.

How to apply for a marriage license in Connecticut?

  • First, to request a marriage license, you must arrive in person with your spouse at the local vital records office in the town/city where you are going to get married.
  • The marriage license is distributed to ensure that you and your spouse can marry.
  • You have to complete the marriage license application, present proof of identity (a valid passport or a valid driver’s license), and state that all information you present is true.
  • In Connecticut, a blood test is no longer necessary to get a marriage license.
  • After the ceremony of marriage, the officiator must present the license to the registrar of vital records of the current town.
  • Then, after they register your marriage license, it becomes a marriage certificate.

Can you request a license and marry on the same day in Connecticut?

How much does the marriage license cost in Connecticut?

To get your marriage license in Connecticut, you pay $50. For a certified copy of the marriage license, you will pay only $20. You can get a copy of your marriage license at the same time when taking the license. Please note that you have to check whether your state accepts cash payments or personal checks. Your state may accept also other payment methods for your marriage license.

How to take a copy of your Connecticut marriage license?

In Connecticut, you have to apply separately for the marriage license copy. Anyone over the age of 18 can purchase a certified copy of the marriage certificate for a fee. The requester may get all data on the marriage certificate, except for the spouse’s social security number. In fact, only the parties to the marriage can get copies of marriage certificates that include the spouse’s social security numbers.

However, if you are requesting a copy of a marriage certificate with a social security number, you will have to present identity proof. In fact, these kinds of documents can be a driver’s license, a copy of your passport, etc. Of course, the documents must show that you are one of the parties mentioned on the marriage certificate.
